POLICY ON POLITICAL ACTIVITIES
As Christians, we are called to be informed and active citizens who exercise this role faithfully. In light of this, Ƶ encourages opportunities for candidates running for political office to visit the campus. Appearance of a candidate for public office on campus may be for an educational purpose or as an independent campaign event.
All appearances must be coordinated by the Events Office in consultation with the Administrative Cabinet. Ƶ reserves the right to refuse unsolicited requests for appearance at the college.
Ƶ invites every presidential candidate in good standing with their political party (be it Republican, Independent, or Democrat) equal access to our campus. This allows us to fulfill our mission of “equipping students, alumni, and the broader community to work effectively for Christ-centered renewal in all aspects of contemporary life.” Ƶmaintains a neutral stance on political candidates and issues, as not doing so would violate our status as a nonprofit institution.
Since Ƶ maintains a neutral stance on political candidates and issues, all activity by students, faculty, and staff should avoid being attributed to the college itself. No resources of the college should be used in connection with individual political activity. The Ƶ name and insignia may not appear on any material used or intended for support of a particular candidate. Funds or contributions for political candidates or campaigns may not under any circumstances be solicited in the name of Ƶ. If Ƶstudents, faculty, or staff make political contributions, they must do so as individuals and not on behalf of Ƶ.
For presidential campaigns, individuals or groups may, independently, reserve facilities from the university for political campaign activities. Facilities are equally available to all candidates and political groups. Three venues are available free of charge to candidates and political groups:
- De Yager Student Activity Center: Located on the bottom level of the Campus Center next to the Defender Grille, the De Yager Student Activity Center holds approximately 300 attendees.
- SB 1606: Located in the Science and Technology Center, this stadium seating lecture hall holds approximately 200 attendees.
- Eckardt Lounge: Located in the Campus Center, the Eckardt Lounge holds approximately 100 attendees.
Ƶ will provide a stage, microphone setup, and access to a sound engineer for the event.
If a candidate / political group chooses to reserve a space at Dordt, they must agree to have the candidate answer three questions from Ƶ students during the Q&A portion of the candidate’s presentation.
Ƶ recognizes the importance of campus and public advertising of sanctioned events and activities in fostering an active and involved college community. At the same time, the university recognizes that an attractive and well-maintained physical campus environment is essential to the overall advancement of the university.
Therefore, Ƶ prohibits political signage from being attached to trees, light standards, buildings, or otherwise affixed to college property. Signage erected upon the grounds will be allowed along the walkways and in front of the facility where the event is taking place. Signage along the roadways is limited to sandwich boards owned by the university. Ƶ will also permit political displays and pamphlet distribution within the area of the event during the day of a scheduled event. All flyers advertising an upcoming political event must be pre-approved and bear the official “Student Services Approved” stamp before being displayed.
News releases announcing a political candidate’s appearance on campus are also allowed and encouraged, but they must include wording that makes it clear that Ƶ is not supporting or endorsing any candidate or elected official.
