The ͹Ƶ Concert Choir will perform a concert at the B.J. Haan Auditorium in Sioux Center on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m.

This free concert is part of a spring tour with performances scheduled throughout Michigan and Ontario, Canada. Directed by Dr. Ryan Smit, director of choral activities at ͹Ƶ, the Concert Choir consists of 54 auditioned singers.

The ensemble will perform a rich and varied selection of music representing many styles and time periods from the Renaissance motets to traditional spirituals to modern works. Featured composers include Palestrina, Sweelinck, Randall Thompson, Brahms, Ola Gjeilo, Dan Forrest, Jaako Mäntyjärvi, Shawn Kirchner, and F. Melius Christiansen.

“Thematically, the program seeks to glorify God by presenting anthems of praise; commemorating the birth, life, and sacrifice of Christ; looking forward to the eternal life that God has promised to us; reveling in God’s remarkable creation through an exploration of the four seasons; and celebrating the joy of music-making with a collection of compelling folk song arrangements,” says Smit.

Currently, 21% of Dordt’s student body participates in music, including over 200 singers in five choral ensembles, and numerous students in two orchestras and four bands. Music scholarships are available to qualified students.

“͹Ƶmusic tours provide students with a unique opportunity to live out the mission and vision of the ͹Ƶ music department: Musical excellence for the glory of God,” says Smit. “These tours, in many ways, are a culmination of how students discover and develop their musical gifts by sharing them with audiences at home and abroad.”
