Dr. Abby De Groot

Associate Professor of Education

Dr. Abigail De Groot serves as associate professor of education at ͹Ƶ.

Motivated by her own experiences with the transformative power of exceptional teachers and effective pedagogy, Dr. De Groot is committed to preparing future educators who can make a lasting impact on students' lives. In addition to teaching, she is the director of the Teacher Preparation Program at Dordt, overseeing accreditation, assessment, and licensing responsibilities. She also serves on the Kuyper Honors Committee.

“I am blessed to participate in work that matters, that ultimately helps equip our teacher education students to build the Kingdom of God through their work with individual children and teenagers,” adds De Groot.

Her research interests focus on adolescent literacy, literacy across content areas, and teacher action research.

Dr. De Groot is also an active contributor to the field of education through her published work. In 2023, she published an article titled “Found Families: An Idea for Blending Whole-Class Novels and Student Choice in Middle School and High School English Classrooms” in the Christian Education Journal. She is also a co-host of the Hallway Conversations podcast, which began in 2021 and covers topics relevant to education and teacher preparation.

Before joining Dordt, Dr. De Groot taught high school English for six years and worked part-time for five additional years, serving as both a librarian and curriculum coordinator during the latter period.
