Community Shining Through

A picture of Chris DeGroot

When Chris arrived at Dordt, he was incredibly independent and disliked relying on other people. Throughout the next four years, he learned to lean on other people and be vulnerable. Chris’s faith became stronger through new friends and honest conversations. He is also grateful for the support of the ͹Ƶcommunity after his best friend passed away after Chris’s sophomore year.

“It was a very difficult time for me, and I spent a lot of time questioning why this had to happen,” he says. “The community at ͹Ƶreally shined through during this challenging time; I had people I barely knew reaching out to me and asking if I needed anything, and it was apparent that everyone on campus was mourning with those of us who were closest to him. I am incredibly thankful for the love and support the ͹Ƶcommunity provided me in that difficult time. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone, but my faith grew through it, and I learned to trust in God's plan no matter how difficult it may seem.”

In addition to the supportive community, Chris was able to participate in a variety of activities. Although ͹Ƶis a small school, there are many opportunities for students, from athletics to academics.

“I spent my first three years at ͹Ƶrunning track and cross country. This was the most rewarding experience I had at Dordt, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I also had the opportunity to be a part of two great clubs while at Dordt; the F.L.A.M.E. club gave me practical experience operating a business that did around $80,000 in sales a year, and Defender Capital Management allowed me to get hands-on investment experience managing a nearly $900,000 portfolio. Not many students at schools this size get to have these types of experiences.”

After graduating, Chris moved to Coralville, Iowa to work as a financial analyst at Great America Financial Services.

“My classes at ͹Ƶhave equipped me not only with the technical skills I need to succeed in the workplace but also with a solid foundation for my faith. I’ve learned that no matter where I am in life, God has a plan; I can't wait to see where he leads me. No matter where that is, I am confident that my education has prepared me well to serve those around me in my career and live my life as a witness for Christ.”
